Ambitious Shimla Ropeways Project Gets Green Nod — Will Sukhu Govt Ground It Before 2028?

Shimla, October 14 — The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted Stage-I forest clearance under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, for the ambitious Shimla Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Project, marking a major breakthrough for the hill capital’s long-pending mobility dream.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri said the project, stretching 13.79 km, aims to connect key points across Shimla city and is expected to cost around ₹1,734.70 crore.

It promises to be a game changer for urban transport in the congested hill town, offering a green, sustainable and modern alternative to the city’s growing traffic woes.

He added that 6.1909 hectares of forest land have been approved for use on a principle basis, subject to all environmental and statutory conditions.

The project is expected to create new jobs for locals and offer tourists a unique travel experience across the Queen of Hills.

Calling it a “big gift for the people of Shimla,” Agnihotri said the project reflects the state government’s vision of a ‘Green and Modern Himachal’. He expressed gratitude to the Centre and the environment ministry for their prompt clearance.

He assured that the construction will strictly adhere to forest and environmental norms, keeping conservation at the core of the implementation process.

Once operational, the ropeway is expected to reduce traffic congestion, cut carbon emissions, and promote eco-friendly transport across the city.

With the project finally getting a green signal, the big question now is — will the Sukhu government be able to ground and operationalize this ambitious ropeway before its current term ends in 2028?
