BJP Stages Walkout, Accuses Sukhu Government of Mismanagement

Dharamshala, November 26, 2025 – The Winter Session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly at Bhuvan, Dharamshala, turned turbulent today as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators, led by Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, staged a walkout, accusing the Sukhu government of misleading the House on panchayat and urban bodies elections and its failure to give relief to disaster-affected families in the state.

CM Sukhu’s Statement in Vidhan Sabha:

“Two years after the disasters, the PDNA (Post-Disaster Needs Assessment) funds have finally been released, and even then, the state has to contribute a portion from its own resources.

The way PDNA installments are released is also challenging — first, we spend from our own treasury, and only later do we receive the corresponding funds from the Centre. Nowadays, even claiming our rightful share from the Centre has become increasingly difficult.

During the BJP’s tenure, Himachal received an additional ₹50,000 crore in disaster and development funds. Under our government, we received ₹50,000 crore less, despite facing severe and frequent disasters. Yet, we did not allow a single project or relief effort to be delayed.

Our priority has always been relief and rehabilitation because we believe governance must be exercised with sensitivity and responsibility.

Unlike the accusations made by the opposition, we have not misled this House or the people regarding Panchayat elections — our focus remains on ensuring timely elections and effective administration, even under challenging circumstances.”

On the other hand, addressing reporters outside the Vidhan Sabha, Thakur slammed the government’s “Vyavastha Parivartan” initiative, calling it nothing more than a publicity stunt.

“The government has no tangible achievements to show. While the Chief Minister prepares to celebrate three years in office, disaster victims across the state remain neglected,” he said.

Disaster Relief and Governance Under Fire

The opposition pointed out the state government’s inability to manage post-disaster relief and rehabilitation, highlighting delays in repairing roads, restoring power, and providing essential services in affected areas.

Thakur also criticized the government for blaming the Centre for delayed disaster funds while spending lavishly on upcoming celebrations marking its three-year tenure.

“Ministers are moving in one direction, while the Chief Minister is going in another. There is no coordination in their statements or actions,” Thakur said.

He also raised concerns over Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri’s repeated absence from the House, questioning the government’s commitment to governance.

Political Tensions Cast Shadow on Winter Session

The session, which will continue till December 5, is expected to witness intense debate.

The opposition warned that business in the House could be stalled, citing the lack of clarity and coordination among ministers.

The BJP also accused the government of prioritizing celebrations over substantive work for the public, pointing to unfinished development projects and pending welfare measures. “If the government cannot deliver on basic governance, it cannot justify these grand events,” Thakur remarked.

Government Response Pending

So far, the Sukhu government has not issued a detailed response to the allegations. Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania urged both sides to engage in constructive debate, emphasizing that the House should not be reduced to noise and conflict.

As the session progresses, all eyes will be on whether the government can respond convincingly to the opposition’s charges and demonstrate a focus on disaster management, welfare schemes, and governance priorities.
