Breaking: UP to Become Global Defence Export Hub, Lucknow to Emerge as Tech ‘Sangam’ of BrahMos—Rajnath Singh
New Delhi/Lucknow/Shimla, May 11 – In a bold vision for Atam- Nirbhar Bharat, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declared that the state of Uttar Pradesh will soon be counted among the world’s top defence production and export destinations, with Lucknow emerging as a global centre for cutting-edge missile technology.
Drawing a powerful parallel, Singh said, "Just like Prayagraj is known for the confluence of holy rivers, Lucknow will now be known for the confluence of India-Russia's highest defence technologies—BrahMos."
Speaking at a defence-related event in Lucknow, Singh said the BrahMos missile system is not just a weapon, but a statement of intent.
"BrahMos is among the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world. It is a message in itself—a message of the strength of our armed forces, a message of deterrence to our enemies, and a message of our unwavering commitment to securing our borders," he said.
The Minister expressed confidence that the BrahMos production facility and defence corridor in Uttar Pradesh will become a "growth pole" for the region.
"This is not just about missiles. This is about economic transformation.

India’s defence export ambitions have taken a sharp upward turn with the international success of the BrahMos missile system.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently hailed the dispatch of the first BrahMos consignment to the Philippines as a landmark moment—not just for strategic diplomacy, but for employment and indigenous defence manufacturing.
"The shipment of BrahMos to the Philippines is not just an arms deal—it’s a statement of India's rising strength and reliability in global defence markets," said PM Modi at a public rally.
He linked this success directly to his government’s push for self-reliance under the ‘Make in India’ campaign, stating that such achievements were unthinkable under previous regimes.
Backed by advanced India-Russia collaboration, the BrahMos missile—among the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles—is now opening doors to billion-dollar export opportunities.
The Ministry of Defence has highlighted that several countries have shown interest in acquiring the missile, positioning India as a serious player in the global arms market.
BrahMos is a flagship example of home-grown technological success.
BrahMos has a successful test of a newer variant of BrahMos featuring fully indigenous systems—underscoring India's capability to produce high-end weapons tech independently.
A defence contract with the Philippines worth approximately $375 million has already boosted India’s export credibility, and discussions are underway with other Southeast Asian and Latin American nations.
In another significant procurement, the Indian Navy ordered 35 BrahMos combat missiles and three training variants for its warships at a cost of Rs 1,723 crore—further demonstrating the system’s operational relevance and economic scale.
With strategic facilities like the BrahMos production unit in Lucknow becoming fully operational, India is not just manufacturing missiles—it is creating a new identity as a defence export powerhouse.
With BrahMos acting as a technological benchmark, Singh believes Lucknow and UP are on track to join the elite club of global defence hubs—bringing strategic pride and economic gains to India.
