Shimla’s Jung Ghar Set for Revival: TRRD Trust Pushes to Restore Forgotten Heritage Hub

Shimla, May 19, 2025 — Once a buzzing centre of community life under the colonial Raj, the century-old Jung Ghar at the base of Shimla’s Ridge has almost  crumbled — but not forgotten.

Capt. Ved Sud, trustee of the TRRD Trust and a passionate voice for heritage revival, has stepped forward with a clear message: “It’s time we bring Jung Ghar back to life.”

Jung Ghar measuring some 1500 sq meter area was abandoned due to loss of life there in the past.

Speaking to Himbu Mail, Capt. Sud said, “We aren’t just fixing bricks and walls — we’re reviving memories, culture, and a shared space that has served generations.”

Located at a critical spot under the Ridge, the Jung Ghar’s condition is now a cause for concern — structurally weak, geologically sensitive, and architecturally neglected.

The TRRD Trust, in association with the local society, has tabled a detailed redevelopment plan that blends heritage conservation with modern utility.

Their proposal includes stabilizing the site to protect the Ridge, restoring the building with its original charm, and repurposing it as a Cancer Serai and cultural centre — a safe resting space for cancer patients and caregivers, alongside a vibrant venue for local events.

“We want to turn this into a living space for hope, healing, and heritage,” said Capt. Sud, adding that the initiative would serve both emotional and environmental needs of the city.

The project also promises environmental and social benefits — reducing pressure on the Ridge, promoting cultural tourism, and providing community support in a meaningful way.

The Trust is calling for public support, government collaboration, and timely approvals to kickstart the transformation.

The government and DC Shimla must take a call on the proposed project to put this defunct property to public use and face lifting the site

“Shimla has always been a city of stories,” said Capt. Sud. “Let’s not allow one of its oldest storytellers to be silenced.”
