Shimla, June 14: On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, health institutions across the country renewed their appeal for voluntary blood donation, emphasizing that a single unit of donated blood can save up to three lives.
The day is being observed with awareness campaigns aimed at dispelling misconceptions that often discourage people from becoming blood donors.
According to AIIMS, social media awareness campaign highlighting the theme "One Drop of Humanity – Give Blood, Save Lives" sought to address common myths surrounding blood donation.
Health experts stressed that donating blood does not make a healthy individual weak or permanently tired. The body replaces the lost fluid within 24 to 48 hours and recovers the donated blood components naturally over time.
Another widespread misconception is that blood donation can spread infections. Medical professionals clarified that all blood collection procedures use sterile, single-use needles, making the process completely safe for donors.
The campaign also addressed concerns about tattoos and piercings. While individuals may need to wait for a prescribed period after getting a tattoo or piercing, they are not permanently barred from donating blood. Likewise, fears about pain during donation are largely unfounded, as donors experience only a brief needle prick.
Health authorities further noted that vegetarians and vegans can also be eligible donors if they maintain adequate iron levels through a balanced diet that includes legumes, pulses, and green leafy vegetables.
According to health guidelines, healthy individuals between the ages of 18 and 65 years are generally eligible to donate blood, subject to medical screening and fitness criteria.
Medical experts pointed out that blood cannot be manufactured artificially and remains dependent on the generosity of voluntary donors. Hospitals require a steady supply of blood for accident victims, patients undergoing surgeries, women facing childbirth complications, and those suffering from conditions such as thalassemia and cancer.
As World Blood Donor Day is observed globally, healthcare institutions are encouraging citizens to come forward and donate blood voluntarily, reminding them that a simple act of kindness can become the difference between life and death for someone in need.
"Donate Blood, Save Lives" remains the central message of this year's awareness drive, highlighting that every drop donated is a gift of hope for patients and their families.
