SHIMLA, JULY 8: In a major push towards sustainable waste management and environmental conservation, the Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing & Processing Corporation (HPMC) has launched a glass bottle buyback scheme aimed at encouraging recycling and reducing glass waste across the state.

The initiative introduces a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the collection, buyback and recycling of used HPMC glass bottles.

The Corporation has designed a structured reverse logistics system that enables consumers, retailers and distributors to return empty bottles for financial incentives while promoting responsible waste disposal.

Under the scheme, consumers will receive cash incentives of ₹1 for every returned 200 ml glass bottle and ₹2 for each 600 ml bottle deposited with authorised retailers.

Retailers and distributors will also be entitled to incentives of up to ₹4 per bottle, depending on their role in the collection chain.

The collection network has been streamlined through authorised retailers, distributors and HPMC offices.

The returned bottles will be transported to HPMC's fruit processing plant at Jarol, where they will be segregated before being sent for recycling.

The Corporation has established a dedicated reverse logistics mechanism to ensure smooth collection and transportation.

HPMC has urged consumers, retailers and distributors to actively participate in the buyback programme, saying the initiative will help minimise glass waste, strengthen recycling practices and contribute to a cleaner and greener Himachal Pradesh.

The Corporation believes the scheme will create a sustainable circular economy model that benefits both the environment and stakeholders involved in the collection process.
