660 MW Unit-1 of SJVN’s Buxar Thermal Power Project Begins Commercial Operations

Marking a major leap in the country’s power generation capacity, SJVN has successfully commenced commercial operations of the 660 MW Unit-1 of its 1320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar.
The announcement was made by SJVN Chairman & Managing Director Bhupender Gupta, who termed the achievement a “significant milestone” in the company’s growth trajectory.
Gupta congratulated the employees and lauded the coordinated efforts of teams, contractors and stakeholders, stating that the successful COD reflects both the technical strength of SJVN and the dedication behind its execution.
SJVN Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma appreciated the collective contribution of all teams, noting that the milestone underscores the company’s commitment to timely, efficient and high-quality project delivery.
“This accomplishment speaks volumes about SJVN’s strong organizational capacity and teamwork,” he said.
Director (Finance) Sipan Kumar Garg added that the commissioning of the first 660 MW unit further solidifies SJVN’s power generation portfolio, reaffirming its position as a multi-dimensional energy company contributing to India’s sustainable energy goals.
The 1320 MW (2x660 MW) Buxar Thermal Power Project, located at Chausa in Buxar district of Bihar, is being developed by SJVN Thermal Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. The first unit was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 22, 2025.
Equipped with state-of-the-art supercritical technology, the plant is designed for higher efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
Once both units are operational, the project will produce 9,828.72 million units of electricity annually, of which 85% has been allocated to Bihar under a long-term power purchase agreement.
