ROHRU: Barely over a month after crowds thronged the Ridge in Shimla to witness the unveiling of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh’s statue, emotions ran high again in Rohru on Monday.
The town of the erstwhile Bushair State turned into a sea of supporters as locals gathered to salute their six-time Chief Minister—this time through a grand statue installed in the place he considered his political home.
The ceremony was led by his son, Vikramaditya Singh, and wife, MP Pratibha Singh, who had together unveiled the first statue at the Ridge. Rohru residents said it felt as if “Raja Sahib had returned home.”
Calling it one of the proudest moments of his life, Vikramaditya said, “As a son and as the representative of this area, it is deeply emotional to see my father immortalised on this soil.
The huge presence of people today shows the love and respect the region still holds for him.”
Locals and leaders recalled how Virbhadra Singh gave Rohru a distinct identity in his long political career—building roads, strengthening health and education institutions, improving irrigation and drinking water schemes, pushing modern agriculture, and ensuring opportunities reached even the remotest villages.
They remembered him as the leader who opened schools, colleges, and hospitals across the constituency, created jobs for local youth, championed girls’ education, empowered women’s groups, and stood firmly with the poorest and weakest sections.
Raja Sahib’s famous words—“Respecting the people is my religion”—echoed through the event. Speakers said his values and service ethos still live on “in every street, school, hospital and farm in the region.”
